Born in Paredes, Sérgio started his career also in the north, at F.C. Paços de Ferreira, before moving to Portuguese League giants Sporting Clube de Portugal in 2003–04.
After just twelve appearances in two seasons, he was loaned to Vitória de Guimarães for 2005–06. In the summer of 2006 Sérgio joined Associação Naval 1º de Maio on a free transfer, although he still had a one-year plus option contract with the Lisbon club. He was the Figueira da Foz side's first-choice right-back through 2006–08, as Naval consecutively retained its top flight status.
In July 2008, Sérgio joined FC Metalurh Donetsk in the Ukrainian Premier League.
Sérgio played for the Portuguese under-21s during two years, representing the nation at the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship, and was also in squad for the 2004 Summer Olympics football tournament.[1]
